Free SGPA to CGPA Calculator: Calculate Your Cumulative Grade Instantly
If you are pursuing an engineering degree (B.Tech), a bachelor's in science, or practically any university degree in India, you are probably very familiar with the anxiety of result day. You open your university portal, check your scorecard, and you see a number like "8.2 SGPA" for your current semester.
While knowing your semester score is great, it isn't what recruiters or higher education universities actually care about. When you sit for campus placements or apply for a Master's program abroad, they don't want to know how you performed in your 4th semester alone. They want your Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA)—the combined, weighted average of every single semester you have completed so far.
Converting your semester-wise SGPAs into a final CGPA isn't just a simple mathematical average. You cannot just add them up and divide by the number of semesters. You have to factor in the "credits" of each semester, which makes the math incredibly tedious. That is exactly why I built this free, highly accurate SGPA to CGPA Calculator. It does the complex credit-weighted math for you instantly!
How to Calculate CGPA from SGPA? (The Real Formula)
A very common mistake students make is calculating a simple average. For example, if they got 8.0 in Sem 1 and 9.0 in Sem 2, they assume their CGPA is exactly 8.5. This is completely wrong!
In the university credit system (used by VTU, Anna University, Mumbai University, and most AICTE colleges), some semesters have more subjects and therefore more "credits" than others. Your CGPA is a weighted average. The actual formula is:
CGPA = Σ (SGPA × Semester Credits) ÷ Total Credits
This means if Semester 1 had 24 credits and Semester 2 only had 20 credits, the score from Semester 1 actually holds more weight in your final CGPA! Our tool handles this complexity effortlessly.
How to Use This Calculator Correctly
Gather Your Mark Sheets
You will need the scorecards for every semester you have completed. Look for two specific numbers on each sheet: your final SGPA for that semester, and the total credits assigned to that semester.
Add Your Semesters
By default, our tool shows input fields for 2 semesters. If you are in your 3rd year (6 semesters), just click the "Add Semester" button until you have 6 rows visible. You can add up to 10 semesters for a full integrated Master's degree!
Enter the Data
Carefully type in the SGPA and the Credits for each row. The moment you enter the numbers, the massive result box at the bottom will automatically update. It calculates everything in real-time, showing your precise CGPA and the total credits you have accumulated.
Why is CGPA So Important for Your Career?
You might think that your skills matter more than your marks. While that is true in the long run, your CGPA is the primary gatekeeper for your first few opportunities. Here is why you need to keep a close eye on your cumulative score:
- 🎓Campus Placement EligibilityTop-tier IT companies (like TCS, Infosys, Wipro, and MNCs) strictly filter candidates based on CGPA. Most companies have a hard cutoff of 7.0 or 7.5 CGPA. If your score is 6.9, their automated systems will reject your resume before a human even sees it.
- 🎓Higher Education ScholarshipsIf you are applying to universities in the US, UK, or Germany, your CGPA is converted to their local GPA scale. A high cumulative score is often the deciding factor for receiving massive tuition fee waivers and scholarships.
- 🎓Government Exams & PSU JobsPublic Sector Undertakings (PSUs) in India, like BHEL or ONGC, often shortlist candidates directly based on their GATE scores combined with their B.Tech CGPA. Maintaining a high score gives you a distinct advantage.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between SGPA and CGPA?
SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) is your performance in a single specific semester. CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is your overall performance across all the semesters you have completed so far in your degree.
Can I calculate CGPA without knowing my semester credits?
Technically, yes, but it will be slightly inaccurate. If you don't know your exact credits, you can assume each semester has the exact same number of credits (e.g., enter "20" for every semester). This will give you a simple mathematical average, which is usually very close to the real CGPA, but not mathematically perfect.
What if I have an active backlog (fail grade) in one semester?
If you have a backlog, you generally do not include those specific subject credits in your final CGPA until you clear the exam. You should only calculate the SGPA for the subjects you have officially passed.
Does this tool save my academic data?
Absolutely not! Your privacy is guaranteed. The calculator runs entirely via Javascript inside your local web browser. Your marks are never uploaded to any server or saved in any database.
