Check Your Public IP Address, Location, ISP, & Network Security

Every single time you load a website, stream a Netflix video, join a Zoom meeting, or play an online multiplayer game, your device exchanges data packets across the global internet.

To ensure those packets return to the right device rather than someone else's computer across the globe, your internet connection is assigned a unique digital mailing address known as an Internet Protocol (IP) Address.

Beyond simple routing, your public IP reveals significant information about your connection: your approximate physical city location, your Internet Service Provider (like Jio, Airtel, Vodafone, or Comcast), your Autonomous System Number (ASN), and whether you are connecting through a proxy or VPN.

Our free IP Address Lookup tool displays your live public IPv4 and IPv6 addresses instantly, along with geographic location mapping, ISP detection, and security proxy checks.

Public IP vs. Private IP: Understanding the Difference

People often get confused when looking at network settings on their phones or laptops:

1. Your Public IP Address

The external address assigned to your home router or mobile cellular connection by your ISP (e.g. 49.36.128.45).

This is the single public address that websites and servers across the internet see when you browse.

2. Your Private (Local) IP Address

Internal addresses assigned strictly inside your home network by your WiFi router (typically 192.168.1.X or 10.0.0.X).

Used strictly for communication between your smart TV, printer, and laptop. Completely invisible to external web servers.

IPv4 vs. IPv6: The Great Address Transition

IPv4 (32-Bit Standard)

Format: Four numbers separated by dots (e.g. 172.217.16.206). Total address pool is capped at roughly 4.3 billion addresses. With billions of smartphones, laptops, and smart home IoT devices online, IPv4 addresses were completely exhausted years ago, forcing ISPs to share addresses using Carrier-Grade NAT (CGNAT).

IPv6 (128-Bit Modern Standard)

Format: Eight groups of four hexadecimal digits separated by colons (e.g. 2001:0db8:85a3:0000:0000:8a2e:0370:7334). Provides an unfathomable 340 undecillion addresses—enough to assign a trillion IP addresses to every grain of sand on Earth!

Can Someone Find My Exact House from My IP Address?

There is a common Hollywood movie myth that an IP address gives hackers your exact bedroom coordinates. In reality, IP geolocation is only approximate to the city or ISP routing hub level.

Websites can determine that you are browsing from "South Mumbai" or "Bengaluru East" connected via Jio Fiber, but they cannot see your home street number, apartment, or personal identity without an official legal subpoena served to your ISP.

If you want to mask your city location and ISP identity completely, using a reputable Virtual Private Network (VPN) encrypts your data and replaces your IP with the VPN server's location.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my IP location show a city 50 km away?

IP geolocation databases map addresses to the nearest regional central office or gateway hub operated by your ISP, which is often located in the nearest metropolitan center rather than your exact residential neighborhood.

Does restarting my home WiFi router change my IP address?

For most residential broadband connections using Dynamic IP allocation, turning off your router for 5 to 10 minutes will often cause your ISP's DHCP server to assign you a fresh, different public IP address upon reconnection.

Is checking my IP address safe here?

Yes. We do not log, store, or sell your IP data. The check is completely anonymous and private.
